Chapter 1 · The Dark WoodwoodPlayable
The Dark Wood
The wood at night you wake in without knowing how you got there.
Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vitami ritrovai per una selva oscura,ché la diritta via era smarrita.
In the poem it is the wood of the first canto, where the road is lost before anything else happens; in the game it is the only place above ground and the only one where you meet no dead.
The ground rises six metres from south to north, because Dante loses himself low down and the hill stands high: the bottom the she wolf drives you back to really is the lowest point of the map. The wood is not drawn by hand, it is read from a plan of characters, and the same plan fills the field that carries the smell of a living body.
The shape comes from Doré: the wood is not made of trees, it is made of trunks that close left and right like the walls of a nave. Nothing here is serving a sentence. The punishment starts after the gate.
