Chapter 1 · The Dark WoodkeyPlayable

Unstrung bow

Good bow wood, and with no string it does not shoot.

Unstrung bow, turning on itself: sixteen views rendered from the game itself.
Rendered from what the game puts on screen. Move over it to turn it.

Dalla violenza si prende la sola violenza concessa: l’arma non è un premio, è un peccato che ti porti dietro.

What the game says
Revealswhat the lion is keeping under its muzzle, and how it is taken.

The three beasts of the first canto are not fought: they are robbed. Each one keeps under its muzzle what it took from whoever came through before you, and the allegory decides which is which. The lion is violence, and what you take from violence is the only violence this game will ever grant you.

You take it while the animal’s head is down, and the line on screen tells you before you press: the lion is watching you, or the lion is bent over its kill. Getting the moment wrong does not kill you, the muzzle comes up and you are driven back down the slope, which in the first canto is the only thing the three beasts do at all. The state is stated before, not after, because a punishment with no way of seeing it coming reads as a dice roll.

On its own the piece does nothing and cannot be held: it sits in the quest rack at the top of the bag, where it takes no cells and cannot be dropped. It waits for the other two.
