Revealswhat is taken from the leopard, and that the same rope is wanted again much further down.
In the poem Dante carries it from the start and only unties it on the lip of the cliff, saying he had worn it girded to catch the leopard. The game has him find it rather than own it, and puts it exactly where the line sends it: under the muzzle of the leopard, the beast that rope was supposed to take.
It serves twice, three chapters apart: here it strings the bow, far below it calls up what waits under the ledge, and there it is used up. That is why the catalogue files it under the chapter of the walls and not under the wood: down there is where it has to be looked for by anyone starting from that chapter without ever having held it, and the slot in the quest rack has to be visible even when empty, or it falls silent at exactly the moment you ought to know to go looking. Whoever arrives without it finds it at the foot of Pier della Vigna.
