Chapter 1 · The Dark WoodlandmarkPlayable

The Hill

The lit hill you can see from anywhere in the wood and never reach.

In the poem it is the hill Dante starts to climb and is driven back from; in the game it stands outside the walkable grid and is never reached, and that is not a trick: in the poem he does not get there either.

It is visible from the whole wood, so you always know where to go, and the level is the discovery that going there does not work. In front of it the mountains drop to a saddle two metres sixty high, more than twice the jump but below eye level, so the hill stays in sight inside a notch between two dark masses. What closes the level is not the summit, it is the vertical wall at the foot.

Its stone is not only its own: everything walled in this wood carries the same stone, which is why the quarry at the bottom of the wood and the ridge to the north are cut from the same rock.
