Chapter 1 · The Dark WoodconsumablePlayable

Torch

A flame held in the right hand, and one you can throw.

Torch, turning on itself: sixteen views rendered from the game itself.
Rendered from what the game puts on screen. Move over it to turn it.

It is not found: it is made, and it is one of only two recipes in the game. A dead branch and a resin tear make a torch that reaches twice as far as the lamp and lasts six minutes. It sits on key 1, the first, because the order of the numbers has to be the order in which things arrive, and the torch arrives before any weapon.

Right hand opens the aim, left hand throws, and between opening and throwing there is time to change your mind. It used to be planted in the ground a step and a half ahead: throwing marks the road just as well and sends it where you cannot go. Nothing is written on screen when it leaves, because a hand going empty and a light moving away are already visible.

It burns down just from being held, and put away it goes back into the bag with the time it has left, in a stack of its own that never adds to the whole torches. Without that bookkeeping a torch burnt halfway and stowed would come back new, which is light manufactured out of nothing by putting it away and taking it out.
