Chapter 2 · The Gate and the AntehellammunitionPlayable
Lead bead
Rosary beads recast in lead: the Miserere’s ammunition.

Una corona si è rotta più su, e i grani sono rotolati giù col sangue. Sono di piombo: qualcuno li aveva fusi così per farli pesare in mano, e adesso pesano in canna. Otto caricano il Miserere.
Beads off a rosary, recast in lead by somebody who wanted them heavy in the hand: now they are heavy in a barrel. One per shot, eight for a full load. The poem has nothing like them: the game takes an object of devotion and makes it something you can fire, because it is the only matter that has any effect on a soul.
Their colour is a declared lie: they are tinted pale rather than the grey of real lead, because a pile of the right colour on a dark riverbed was invisible. Along the stream in the antehell there are sixteen of them in five piles, twice what is needed, so that missing a pile never stops a chapter. The line the game shows over them says a rosary broke further up and the beads rolled down with the blood, that they are lead and were fused that way to weigh in the hand and now weigh in the barrel, and that eight of them load the Miserere.
