Chapter 4 · The Walls of DisdemonCircle VIBeing built
The Devils of Dis
The fallen angels who hold the city gate shut.

Revealswhich weapon touches them and which does not.
«Io vidi più di mille in su le porte / da ciel piovuti» (Inf. VIII 82-83). They are not punished souls and they serve no sentence: they are fallen angels, and they are on guard duty. The game makes the difference physical inside twenty seconds, with no sign to read: the arrow does not mark them, because it is a mortal weapon against something that never died, and only the weapon that comes from above scatters them.
They do not give chase, and that is not the game giving up: in the canto they never come down off the gates, so here they hold their line and throw iron shafts at you. The arm goes up before the throw, and the shaft goes to where you were rather than where you will be, so it is dodged by moving. The censer has less reach than their throw, and the open ground left in between is the whole fight.
On one point the game leaves Doré’s plates and follows the text: these have neither wings nor hooks. The ones with wings and grapples are the Malebranche, thirteen cantos further down.
