The Necropolis of the Heretics
The field of open, red hot tombs inside the walls of Dis.

In the poem it is the sixth circle: inside the city a great plain opens up, full of uncovered sepulchres with their lids set down beside them, one sect to each tomb, and they are burning. In the game it is a field of veined stone tombs with the embers showing through the joints, set between the wall and the centre of the city, with the road running through the middle of it.
The lids are not decoration: they are the only cover the field has, and they are also what tells you where a tomb is when the dark will not let you see it. And this is where the old weapons start working again, after a circle in which the arrow was no use at all.
From one tomb Farinata rises, from the waist up, upright as if he held Hell in great contempt; from another Cavalcante, on his knees, asking after his son and taking the answer wrongly. Each tomb belongs to a sect, and inside lies whoever believed there was nothing on the other side. They stay open until the Judgement, and then they will close for good.
