Chapter 1 · The Dark WoodammunitionPlayable
Arrow
The only ammunition in the game you go back for.

A dead branch and a flint shard give three arrows, and three rather than one: one arrow per branch would mean every shot costs a walk through the wood, and someone low on arrows stops shooting instead of shooting better.
A loosed arrow does not vanish. It stays stuck at the angle it arrived at, sinks half its shaft into whatever it hit and becomes a child of it, so if that thing moves the arrow goes with it. Once still it is picked up like anything else on the ground, and it glimmers, because nobody ever finds a dark shaft in a black wood. The cost of the shot is not the arrow: it is the walk back for it.
Nothing dies down here, so an arrow does not kill: it pins. Driven into one of the damned it holds him where he stands for as long as it stays in, and the moment you pull it out he starts again. That is also why the crowd of the antehell cannot be shot through: on someone who was already standing still nothing shows, and an arrow in a body that was not moving has opened no road.
