Chapter 3 · IncontinenceguardianCircle IVBeing built
Plutus
The beast that bars the way down to the fourth circle: a living gate.

tal cadde a terra la fiera crudele
Revealswhat waits for you on the threshold of the fourth circle.
In the seventh canto he shouts the most famous line in the Inferno that means nothing at all, and falls the moment Virgil tells him to consume himself inside with his own rage; in the game he is the one door in the chapter that does not open by walking. He stands against the wall at the mouth of the narrow landslide, and his body plugs the descent and a good stretch of the ledge with it: whoever does not bring him down has to walk the ring round to the wide landslide, or go past him inside the track where the weights roll.
He used to be an ornament: he stood on the threshold, shouted, and the code said in so many words that he was not a monster and blocked nothing. Players asked for monsters, and this canto already had one ready. The cycle is always the same and you learn it by watching: he swells with what he smells, he shouts, and then he stays deflated. The shout shoves back whatever is in the cone in front of him, and in a narrow corridor that means starting the approach over.
He does not know where you are. He has no eyes looking for you: the cycle begins when he smells enough at his own threshold and stops when the smell drops, so planted around a corner he is as blind as a shut door. How he is brought down is not written here, on purpose: it is the answer to something the game asks you.
