The man crucified on the ground in the sixth ditch is held there by three stakes, and each stake gives up two of these when it is drawn. They are not ammunition yet: iron a palm long does not go down a barrel. Laid against the lump of pitch in the bag, each one becomes four nails for the ribaldo, and the pitch stays where it was.
The line that comes with the first stake says two cross nails and three stakes, and that with the pitch from the bank they load the ribaldo: it is the one place in the game that tells you where the other half of a recipe is. The step of the chapter closes on the first stake drawn. On the ice of Cocytus there are four more beside the traitors to their country, and they fall back down the pit once taken.
