Chapter 5 · MalebolgekeyCircle VIIIBeing built
The unlit candle
A paschal candle set into the stone, and there is nothing down here to light it with.

Un cero pasquale, colato nella pietra accanto a un foro. Lo vendevano insieme al resto. Quaggiù non c’è niente con cui accenderlo, e non è un buon segno che sia ancora intero.
The paschal candle is the one lit once a year, and the one nobody sells. The simoniacs sold it along with everything else, and that is why one is found set into the stone beside a hole in the third ditch, still whole.
It is the only thing in the chapter you find long before you know what it is for, and the game does nothing to help: the line you read when you look at it says only that there is nothing down here to light it with. Here the key and the lock sit in two different ditches. That line also says the candle was sold along with the rest, and that it being still whole is not a good sign.
